Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, nails, hair and its diseases. It is a specialty with both medical and surgical aspects.
Pimples can be treated by various acne medications prescribed by a physician. Pimples arise from pores that are clogged by sebaceous glands producing sebum. When the outer layers of the skin shed, the dead skin cells left behind may become ‘glued’ together by the sebum. This causes the blockage in the pore, especially when the skin becomes thicker at puberty.
Acne is an infection of the skin, caused by changes in the sebaceous glands. The most common form of acne is called acne vulgaris, which means “common acne.” The redness comes from the inflammation of the skin in response to the infection. Oils from the glands combine with dead skin cells to block hair follicles. Under the blocked pore, oil builds up. Skin bacteria can then grow very quickly. This infection makes the skin swollen and red, which becomes visible. The face, chest, back, and upper arms are the most common places for acne to appear. Acne is common during puberty, triggered by hormonal changes that take place when a person turns from a child to an adult. Acne becomes less common as people reach adulthood.
Skin disease can be caused by a wide variety of germs, and symptoms can vary in severity. In some cases, disease can spread beyond the skin and into the bloodstream. Some common types of skin disease are boils, cellulitis, rubella, fifths disease, yeast infection, ringworm, methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) etc.
Rashes and Spots
Skin inflammation due to skin infection is called infective dermatitis. A rash is a change that occurs on the skin affecting its color, appearance, or texture. A rash may be localized in one part of the body, or affect the skin on the entire body. Due to rashes, the skin may become warm, bumpy, dry, cracked, swollen, and may be painful. Bacteria, fungus, parasitic infestation, stings and bites are the main causes of skin infection. The causes, and therefore treatments for rashes, vary widely.
